Henry Benfield, better known as the “Gas Man”,
has been all around racing for the better part of forty years
with a career that started on dirt tracks like the Hickory Motor
Speedway NC on the crews of racing pioneers like Pete Stewart
and Don Tilley. Through the years Benfield has worked on several
NASCAR Busch and Winston Cups teams including time spent on the
crew of racing legend Junior Johnson. His earliest Winston cup
experience was with Larry Smith and he has worked with Tim
Richmond on the Rick Hendrick team, Morgan-McClure and Bobby
Hamilton, The Woods Brothers and Elliot Sadler and Ricky
Rudd. Benfield has also worked for many years with “Mr.
Excitement” Jimmy Spencer and Spencer Motor Ventures in a
variety of different position. Benfield says that Jimmy fills
the shoes of the “older” brother I never had. Henry also has
some solid racing experience for several years in the early
1990’s racing in the NASCAR Sportsman Series. You may remember
the car he drove there sponsored by Ben and Sam’s Ford.
Benfield is looking forward to being part of the 2003 ARCA
RE/MAX Series in his 2002 Ford Taurus sponsored by Jerald J.
